The Power of Stepping Away: Why Retreats Are So Good for the Soul

Sometimes you don’t realize how much you need to step away until you finally do.

We spend so much of our lives moving from one thing to the next. Work, family, appointments, responsibilities, phones, emails, and all the little things that need our attention. Even when we have a free moment, many of us have forgotten how to simply be still.

That is one reason I believe retreats can be so powerful.

A retreat isn’t about escaping your life. It’s about creating enough space from your everyday routine to reconnect with yourself, with others, with nature, and for many of us, with God.

After our most recent Holistic View Retreat, I came home with such a full heart. Once everything was quiet and I had time to reflect, I kept thinking about the beautiful women who showed up, the conversations, the laughter, the tears, the meditation, the movement, the nourishing food, and the moments when we simply sat together and were present.

I believe there were conversations only God knew needed to happen.

And that reminded me of something important: sometimes the greatest benefit of a retreat isn't something you can put on an itinerary.

Creating Space to Hear Yourself Again

When was the last time you sat quietly without thinking about what you needed to do next?

Retreats intentionally create that space.

Through yoga, meditation, journaling, breathwork, time in nature, nourishing meals, or simply sitting quietly with a cup of cacao, we give our minds and bodies permission to slow down.

When the outside noise gets quieter, sometimes we can finally hear what has been inside us all along.

You may recognize something you need to let go of. You may find clarity around a decision. You may realize how tired you've been. Or you may simply remember what it feels like to be present in your own life.

There doesn't always have to be a huge breakthrough. Sometimes feeling peaceful again is enough.

The Healing Power of Connection

Something else happens at retreats that I don't think we talk about enough.

People connect.

Not through social media. Not through a quick text. Not while rushing out the door.

They sit across from each other. They eat together. They talk. They listen. They laugh. They share stories. And sometimes, without even realizing it, they show others exactly who they are.

One of my favorite activities from our retreat was incredibly simple. In our closing ceremony, each woman wrote one word on a card describing how they experienced that person. Then the cards were collected and given to them. As people read the words aloud, tears were shed.

What amazed me was seeing how people show up for others without even knowing it.

These women hadn't known each other for years. Some had only known each other for a weekend. Yet in that short amount of time, they saw kindness, strength, joy, peace, courage, warmth, compassion, and so many other beautiful qualities in one another.

Sometimes we don't recognize those things in ourselves.

We move through life simply being who we are, never realizing the impact our presence has on the people around us. Then someone reflects it back to us, and suddenly we get to see ourselves through someone else's eyes.

Nourishing the Whole Person

Wellness is about more than exercise or eating healthy food.

It's about caring for the whole person.

During a retreat, you have an opportunity to nourish your body through movement, rest, sleep, fresh food, hydration, and time outside. But you're also nourishing your emotional and spiritual well-being.

At our retreat, Lara with Naturally Yew prepared beautiful organic meals for us, and what made them special wasn't just the ingredients. You could feel the love and intention behind them.

We slowed down and ate together.

That alone feels almost radical in a world where so many meals are eaten while working, driving, scrolling, or rushing to the next thing.

Wellness doesn't always need to be complicated.

Sometimes it's good food, movement, rest, meaningful conversation, and feeling cared for.

Let Go and Let God

This retreat taught me something, too.

I had plans. I had hopes for how the weekend would go. And, of course, as the person hosting the retreat, I wanted everything to be perfect.

But at some point, I had to let go and let God.

I had to trust that the right people would show up. That the women who needed this particular weekend would be there. That the conversations that needed to happen would happen.

And they did.

It was a beautiful reminder that we don't have to control every detail of our lives.

Sometimes we need to prepare the space, open our hearts, and trust what unfolds.

You Don't Have to Earn Rest

I think many women struggle with this one.

We tell ourselves we'll rest when everything is finished.

But when is everything ever finished?

There will always be another email, another load of laundry, another project, another person who needs something.

Rest isn't something we should only allow ourselves once we've reached the end of an impossible to-do list.

Taking time for yourself doesn't make you selfish. It gives you an opportunity to return to your life more grounded, present, and connected to what actually matters.

And you don't necessarily need a week in some faraway destination to experience that.

A retreat can be a weekend. It can be a day. Sometimes even a few intentional hours away from your normal routine can remind you how important it is to slow down.

Maybe It's Your Turn to Step Away

If you've been feeling tired, disconnected, overwhelmed, or like you're simply moving through the motions, maybe you don't need to push harder.

Maybe you need some space.

Space to breathe.

Space to move.

Space to pray.

Space to journal.

Space to laugh.

Space to have a conversation you didn't know you needed.

Space to remember yourself.

That is what I hope to create through Holistic View Retreats. Not perfection. Not another place where you have to perform or become a "better" version of yourself.

Just a place where you can come as you are, slow down, connect, and be present.

Because sometimes stepping away for a little while helps us come home to ourselves.

Stay present. Take care of yourself. And don't forget that you deserve time to simply be.

With love,
